Hangul is the native script of the Korean language. With 14 consonants and 10 vowels, they can be combined into blocks of words that form the Korean language.
The Hangul system was created by King Sejong in December 1443. Before Hangul was created, Koreans used Chinese characters as their system of writing for a long time. However, this system was weak and awkward for usage since it is the writing system of another language.
Feeling sorry towards the Korean populace, King Sejong instituted Jibhyenjeon, an academic research institute in the royal court where scholars worked on the creation of Hangul. Today, Hangul is recognized as the only script in the world built upon scientific principles. For example, its consonants are shaped according to one’s mouth shape when you produce the particular sound.
