DMZ, an Ecological Treasure Trove

Bearing the pain of a divided nation and hope for peace, the DMZ(Demilitarized Zone)is a neutral zone created by the Korean War Armistice Agreement signed on July 27 1953. It expands 2km south and north of the Military Demarcation Line across the center of the Korean Peninsula. Having been a restricted area for decades, the very well-preserved natural ecosystem has become a major eco-tourism destination.

1. The 2nd Tunnel 제2땅끝

Made by North Korea to infiltrate into the South, this tunnel with several exits was discovered in 1975. Visitors can walk through the tunnel which houses a plaza-like area that can accommodate very large crowds.

2. Labor Party Building 노동당사

This old Soviet-style structure was built to serve as the North Korean Labor Party building. A battlefield of the Korea War, traces of the war can be seen to this day.

3. Dorasan Station 도라산역

Located within the restricted area, this is the northernmost station in South Korea that symbolizes peace and unification. Dora Observatory and the 3rd Tunnel are located nearby.

4. DMZ Eco Peace Park Trail DMZ생태평화공원

Part of a restricted area closed off to the public was developed into trekking trails and opend as an opened as an eco-park. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature.

-DMZ Tours

Because the DMZ spans across several regions and tours are offered at many locations. It is recommended to plan your travel itinerary first, and then find the nearest DMZ tour. Tickets for the 3rd Tunnel and Dorasan Station tours are available at the Imjingak Tourist Information Center(DMZ ticket office), and tickets for the Cheorwon Observatory and 2nd Tunnel tour can be purchased at the Baengmagoji Station Information Desk. DMZ tours require all visitors to present a valid passport, and pictures can be taken in designated areas only

 

-DMZ Peace Train

This is a tourist train that travels along the Demilitarized Zone. The Gyeongui Line departs from Seoul Station and goes to Munsan and Dorasan Stations, While the Gyeongwon Line departs from Seou Station and goes to Yeoncheon and Baengmagoji Stations.
