Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty
Tomb sites for kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty(1392-1910)were chosen based on geomantic traditions and Confucian beliefs, therefore most were located near the capital city, today’s Seoul. The history and construction process of the tombs are exhibited at the Royal Tomb Museum of the Joseon Dynasty near Taereung Royal Tomb.
Most Visited Tombs
1. Seolleung & Jeongneung Royal Tombs
서울 선릉과 정릉

These royal tombs are located in Seoul. Seolleung is the tomb of King Seongjong(1457-1494),the 9th king of the dynasty, and his queen, Queen Jeonghyeon. Jeongneung is the tomb of the 11th king of the dynasty, king Jungjong(1488-1544).

2. Yeongneung & Yeongneung Royal Tombs
여주 영릉과 영릉

This is the tomb of King Sejong, the 4th and greatest king of the Joseon Dynasty(1397-1450) and his queen, Queen Soheon(1395-1446). And located close by is the other tomb by the same name, which is that of King Hyojong(1619-1659), the 17th king of the dynasty, and his queen, Queen Inseon.

3. Donggureung Royal Tombs 경기동구릉
This is site houses nine royal tombs including that of king Taejo Yi Seong-gye(1335-1408),founder of Joseon.
