About Hangul 한글 이야기
The Korean alphabet is the only writing system in the world whose creator, birthday and design manual are all known. Meet the science, the history and the king behind it — then build your first Korean syllable yourself.

What is Hangul? 한글이란 무엇인가요?
Hangul (한글) is the alphabet used to write Korean. Instead of memorising thousands of characters, you learn a small set of letters that stack together into neat syllable blocks — like phonetic LEGO.
Consonants 자음
Their shapes are drawings of your mouth, tongue and throat as you pronounce them.
Vowels 모음
Built from just three symbols: heaven (•), earth (ㅡ) and human (ㅣ).
Possible syllables 글자 조합
Letters combine into blocks — one block per syllable, like 한 = ㅎ+ㅏ+ㄴ.
Then and now 옛글자
Sejong created 28 letters; 4 fell out of use (ㆍ ㅿ ㆆ ㆁ). Today we use 24.
King Sejong the Great 세종대왕 (1397–1450)
The fourth king of the Joseon dynasty (r. 1418–1450) — scientist, musician, linguist, and the most beloved monarch in Korean history. His face is on the 10,000-won bill, and his statue watches over Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul.
- 📖Why he invented Hangul — Ordinary Koreans couldn’t read or write, because writing meant classical Chinese characters that took years of study. Sejong wanted every farmer and fisherman to be able to say what they wished to say.
- 🔬A scientist king — Under his reign Korea produced the world’s first standardised rain gauge (측우기, 1441), automatic water clocks and sundials with the engineer Jang Yeong-sil, plus advances in farming, medicine and music.
- 🌏His name lives on — Sejong City (Korea’s administrative capital), King Sejong Station in Antarctica, and UNESCO’s King Sejong Literacy Prize — awarded every year to people fighting illiteracy worldwide.
- 🎂May 15, his birthday, is celebrated in Korea as Teachers’ Day — honouring the nation’s greatest teacher.
The speech of our country is different from Chinese, so poor people cannot express what they wish to say. Taking pity on them, I have made twenty-eight new letters, so that everyone may learn them with ease and use them every day.
— King Sejong, preface to the Hunminjeongeum (1446), abridged translation 나랏말이 중국과 달라 … 새로 스물여덟 자를 만드니, 사람마다 쉽게 익혀 날마다 쓰기 편안하게 하고자 할 따름이다.
Hunminjeongeum 훈민정음 — “The Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People”
Hangul wasn’t just invented — it shipped with a user manual. In 1446 Sejong published the Hunminjeongeum, and with it the Haerye (해례본): a commentary volume in which his scholars explain, letter by letter, why each letter looks the way it does. No other writing system on Earth has such a document.
Originally both the name of the alphabet and of the book announcing it. The alphabet was later renamed 한글 (“the great script”) by linguist Ju Si-gyeong in the early 1910s.
- 🏛️National Treasure of Korea — the only surviving Haerye copy was rediscovered in Andong in 1940 and is kept at the Kansong Art Museum in Seoul.
- 🌐UNESCO Memory of the World (1997) — recognised as a documentary heritage of all humanity.
- 🎉Hangul Day — October 9 — a national holiday in Korea celebrating the promulgation of 1446. One of the very few holidays anywhere dedicated to an alphabet.
- ⏱️“A wise man can learn them before the morning is over; even a fool can learn them in ten days.” — scholar Jeong In-ji, in the Haerye postscript.
A short history of Hangul 한글이 걸어온 길
From a king’s secret project to the script of K-pop, smartphones and 80 million speakers.
- 1443
The alphabet is created
After years of linguistic study, Sejong completes the 28 letters of Hunminjeongeum — reportedly working on it even as his eyesight failed.
- 1446
Proclaimed to the people
The Hunminjeongeum and its Haerye commentary are published. October 9 — Hangul Day — commemorates this moment.
- 1400s–1800s
The people’s script
The elite kept writing in Chinese characters and dismissed the new script as eonmun (“vernacular writing”), but it spread through letters, poetry and novels — famously The Tale of Hong Gildong — and gave women and commoners their first broad access to literacy.
- 1504
Surviving a ban
After anonymous posters criticised the tyrant king Yeonsangun, he banned the study and use of Hangul — it survived anyway, in kitchens, markets and family letters.
- 1894
Official at last
The Gabo Reform makes Korean written in Hangul the official script of state documents, 450 years after its creation.
- 1910s
A new name: 한글
Pioneering linguist Ju Si-gyeong popularises the name Hangul — “the one great script” — as scholars systematise spelling and grammar.
- 1926–1933
Kept alive under colonial rule
During the Japanese occupation, when Korean was pushed out of schools, the Korean Language Society declares the first Hangul Day (1926) and publishes the unified orthography (1933). Preserving the script became an act of quiet resistance.
- 1940
The manual resurfaces
The only surviving copy of the Haerye is discovered in Andong, revealing the exact design logic of every letter.
- 1997
World heritage
UNESCO inscribes the Hunminjeongeum Haerye in the Memory of the World register. Since 1989 UNESCO has also awarded the King Sejong Literacy Prize.
- Today
The digital age script
Hangul’s block design fits keyboards and screens beautifully — Korean is one of the fastest languages to type on a phone. In 2009 the Cia-Cia community in Indonesia even adopted Hangul to write their own language.
The science of Hangul — try it yourself 한글 창제 원리 체험
Hangul is called a featural script: the shape of each letter encodes how you pronounce it. Explore the four design ideas below — no Korean knowledge needed.
The five basic consonants are pictures of your speech organs. Click a letter and watch the diagram — the red shape is the letter, drawn exactly where your tongue, lips or throat make the sound. 기본 자음 5자는 발음 기관의 모양을 본떴습니다.
Stronger sound? Add a stroke. From each basic letter, related sounds are made by adding strokes — so letters that sound alike also look alike. Click each card to add strokes. 소리가 세지면 획을 더합니다 — 가획의 원리.
Tip: this is why Korean feels so systematic — if you can read ㄱ, you already half-know ㅋ and ㄲ.
Every vowel is philosophy you can write. Three symbols — a round dot for heaven/sun (•), a flat line for earth (ㅡ), a standing line for human (ㅣ) — combine into all Korean vowels. Choose a combination: 모음은 하늘·땅·사람(천지인)의 조합입니다.
하늘 ㅡearth
땅 ㅣhuman
사람
Now write real Korean. A syllable block = first consonant (초성) + vowel (중성) + optional final consonant (받침). Pick one of each and watch your syllable assemble itself. 초성·중성·받침을 골라 글자를 만들어 보세요.
① First consonant · 초성
② Vowel · 중성
③ Final consonant · 받침 (optional)
Why linguists love Hangul 한글이 특별한 이유
A featural script
Letter shapes encode pronunciation features — a design so unusual that linguists coined a whole category for it. Related sounds share related shapes, which makes reading strangely intuitive.
A known birthday
Most scripts evolved anonymously over centuries. Hangul has a creator, a publication date, a stated purpose and a design manual — unique among the world’s major writing systems.
Fast to learn
Many learners read simple Korean words within hours. That radical learnability helped Korea reach near-universal literacy — exactly what Sejong hoped for.
Built for the digital age
24 letters map perfectly onto keyboards; syllable blocks assemble automatically as you type. Try our Korean Typing practice and feel it yourself.
Honoured worldwide
The Haerye is UNESCO Memory of the World, and UNESCO’s international literacy prize is named after King Sejong — Hangul stands as a symbol of literacy for all.
It has its own holiday
October 9 is Hangul Day, a national holiday in Korea — parades, exhibitions and calligraphy for an alphabet. How many scripts can say that?
You just learned about Hangul.
